Emma telt in de buurtwinkel

1. Emma loopt met haar vader, Tom, de buurtwinkel van meneer Jan binnen.

   Emma walks with her father, Tom, into Mr. Jan's neighborhood shop.

2. Ze wil warme melk met honing maken voor het slapengaan.

   She wants to make warm milk with honey before bedtime.

3. Ook moet ze lint kopen om haar plant te meten voor school.

   She also needs to buy ribbon to measure her plant for school.

4. Ze houdt haar kleine portemonnee vast, en er zitten munten en biljetten in.

   She holds her small wallet, and there are coins and bills in it.

5. Bij het zuivelschap pakt Emma een fles van één liter melk.

   At the dairy shelf Emma picks up a one-liter bottle of milk.

6. Papa legt een zak met een kilo appels in het mandje.

   Dad puts a one-kilo bag of apples in the basket.

7. Bij de toonbank meet meneer Jan een stuk lint van één meter voor haar.

   At the counter Mr. Jan measures a piece of ribbon one meter long for her.

8. Hij knipt er nog één centimeter extra bij, zodat het nooit te kort is.

   He cuts one more centimeter so it will never be too short.

9. Emma kijkt naar de kaart aan de muur en leest dat haar school twee kilometer verderop ligt.

   Emma looks at the map on the wall and reads that her school is two kilometers away.

10. Ze vraagt zacht: Hoe ver is dat precies?

11. Jan lachte en vertelde dat het een korte fietsrit is.

13. Bij de kassa telt Emma hardop hoeveel euro ze nodig heeft.

    At the checkout, Emma counts aloud how many euros she needs.

14. Op een potje jam ziet ze een oud prijskaartje met het woord pound, en ze fronst.

    On a jar of jam she sees an old price tag with the word pound, and she frowns.

15. Jan legt uit dat die sticker uit Engeland komt en dat de prijzen hier in euro zijn.

    Jan explains that that sticker comes from England and that the prices here are in euros.

16. Emma was even bang dat haar geld niet genoeg was, maar ze telt rustig door en het past precies.

    Emma was a little afraid her money would not be enough, but she counts calmly and it is just enough.

17. Jan wijst naar een houten klok en zegt dat de winkel al honderd jaar bestaat, een hele eeuw, in het Engels: century.

    Jan points to a wooden clock and says that the shop has been here for a hundred years, a whole century, in English: "century".

18. Hij rondt de prijs af en geeft Emma een bon en wat muntjes terug.

    He rounds the price and gives Emma a receipt and some coins back.

19. Emma en Tom bedanken hem en houden de volle tas stevig vast bij de deur.

    Emma and Tom thank him and hold the full bag tightly by the door.

20. Ze zwaait naar Jan en voelt zich zeker, want alles is gelukt en het is bijna bedtijd.

    She waves at Jan and feels confident, because everything worked out and it's almost bedtime.
