The kitchen table is warm in the evening.
Tess wants to play and learn with her brother Daan.
Mama Noor puts a stack of cards on the table.
"We're playing True or Not," Mom says, "and you give an answer."
She draws a red dot on the card for 'good'.
She puts an empty bowl on the right for the correct cards.
Daan leest: "Melk is wit," en Tess zegt: "Dat is waar."
Daan reads, "Milk is white," and Tess says, "That's true."
Mama knikt en zegt: "Dat is juist."
Mom nods and says, "That's right."
Tess puts the card in the bowl and laughs because the game is fun.
Then a tricky sentence appears: "Strawberries are blue," and Daan hesitates.
Tess zegt: "Nee, dat is niet zo."
Tess says, 'No, that's not true.'
"Is dat waar?" vraagt Daan zacht.
"Is that true?" asks Daan softly.
Mom says, 'Look in her book on the table.'
They see red strawberries and know: the sentence is wrong.
Tess doesn't put the card in the bowl on the right, but in the other one.
Mama smiles and says, 'Well done, you check first, and then you choose.'
"Eerst vragen, dan kijken, dan kiezen," zegt Tess blij.
"Ask first, then look, then choose," says Tess happily.
They put away the cards, and the kitchen is quiet again.
Tess yawns, thanks Mom, and goes to bed.
