Story

El mapa de la calle del mercado

1. Emma mira el reloj de la calle y ve que son las siete y media.

   Emma looks at the street clock and sees that it's seven thirty.

2. Ella y su hermano Nico quieren comprar pan en la panadería y tienen que llegar antes de que cierre.

   She and her brother Nico want to buy bread at the bakery and they have to get there before it closes.

3. Están en la entrada del metro de su barrio, en la calle del mercado.

   They are at the subway entrance in their neighborhood, on Market Street.

4. Emma guarda un pequeño mapa que mamá le dibujó.

   Emma puts away a small map that her mom drew for her.

5. Hoy hay puestos de feria y su camino normal está cerrado, así que dudan un momento.

   There are fair stalls today and their usual path is closed, so they hesitate for a moment.

6. En la pared de la estación hay un mapa con una rosa de los vientos y un cartel del desierto.

   On the station wall there is a map with a compass rose and a poster of the desert.

7. Emma respira, señala el mapa y dice: "Primero vamos hacia el norte por esta calle".

   Emma takes a breath, points to the map and says, "First we go north on this street."

8. Nico pregunta: "¿Está lejos la panadería?".

   Nico asks, 'Is the bakery far?'.

9. Emma contesta: "No, no está muy lejos; doblamos a la izquierda en la segunda calle".

   Emma answers, "No, it's not very far; we turn left on the second street.".

10. "Después seguimos hacia el oeste hasta ver la panadería de la señora Rosa".

    "Then we go west until we see Mrs. Rosa's bakery."

11. "No vamos al sur porque allí la feria tapa la acera".

    "We won't go south because the fair blocks the sidewalk there."

12. Emma toma la mano de Nico y los dos caminan con calma, contando esquinas juntos.

    Emma takes Nico's hand and they walk calmly, counting corners together.

13. Llegan a la esquina, giran a la izquierda, pasan la segunda tienda y siguen recto.

    They reach the corner, turn left, pass the second shop, and go straight on.

14. Al final de la manzana aparece el letrero de la panadería y una luz tibia en la puerta.

    At the end of the block, a bakery sign appears and a warm light shines at the door.

15. La señora Rosa los saluda en la entrada y dice que aún hay pan recién hecho.

    Mrs. Rosa greets them at the door and says there is still fresh bread.

16. Emma pide una media barra y un bollo pequeño para Nico.

    Emma asks for half a roll and a small bun for Nico.

17. Los niños se sientan en el banco frente a la tienda y comparten un trocito, contentos.

    The children sit on the bench in front of the shop and happily share a little piece.

18. El reloj de la calle marca la hora y Emma sonríe: llegaron a tiempo y conocen el camino para mañana.

    The street clock shows the time and Emma smiles: they arrived on time and know the way for tomorrow.
