Verhaal

De bakker onder de stad

1. Mila en haar moeder Noor staan in het zachte licht van het metrostation, in de ondergrondse winkelgang.

   Mila and her mother Noor stand in the soft light of the subway station, in the underground shopping corridor.

2. Mila wil een warm broodje kopen om te delen, en ze willen de bakker vinden.

   Mila wants to buy a warm roll to share, and they want to find the baker.

3. Op het bord boven de trap staat een rond teken met het woord Underground, en Mila wijst ernaar.

   On the sign above the stairs is a round symbol with the word 'Underground', and Mila points to it.

4. Naast het bord zien ze een kaart met pijlen naar Noord, Zuid en West.

   Next to the board they see a map with arrows to North, South and West.

5. De bakker is links van de lange trap, bij de tweede gang.

   The baker is to the left of the long staircase, by the second aisle.

6. Welke kant nemen we, mam?

   Which way do we go, Mom?

7. We moeten linksaf en dan rechtdoor, zegt Noor rustig.

   We have to turn left and then go straight, Noor says calmly.

8. Ze lopen de gang in, maar het lijkt ver, en Mila twijfelt.

   They walk into the hall, but it seems far, and Mila hesitates.

9. Aan de muur hangt een reisposter met een brede woestijn en een kameel, en Mila lacht.

   On the wall is a travel poster showing a wide desert and a camel, and Mila smiles.

10. Mila kijkt op het scherm en ziet de Engelse tijdzin 'half-past' knipperen naast een klok.

    Mila looks at the screen and sees the English time phrase 'half-past' blinking next to a clock.

11. Het is bijna half drie, dus ze willen iets sneller lopen.

    It's almost half past two, so they want to walk a bit faster.

12. Gisteren waren ze hier ook en ze gingen even verkeerd, maar vandaag letten ze goed op.

    They were here yesterday too and went the wrong way for a bit, but today they are paying close attention.

13. Bij het kleine infopunt vraagt Mila: Hoe ver is het nog tot de bakker?

    At the small info point, Mila asks, 'How far is it to the bakery?'

14. De vrouw zegt: Neem de trap omlaag, dan zie je de bakker om de hoek om drie uur klaarstaan.

    The woman says, 'Go down the stairs, and you'll see the baker around the corner at three o'clock.'

15. Mila glimlacht, want ze wil een half broodje kaas delen met mama.

    Mila smiles because she wants to share half a cheese sandwich with Mom.

16. Ze vinden de bakker, direct links van de vitrine, en de geur is zoet en rustig.

    They find the bakery, just to the left of the display window, and the smell is sweet and gentle.

17. Ze zitten samen op een bankje, delen het broodje, en Mila zegt dat de pijlen naar Noord, Zuid en West echt hielpen.

    They sit together on a bench, share the sandwich, and Mila says the arrows to North, South, and West really helped.

18. Als de klok tikt en de hal stil wordt, fluistert Noor: Jij kunt nu zelf de weg vinden, en Mila sluit haar ogen tevreden.

    When the clock ticks and the hall grows quiet, Noor whispers, "You can find your way now," and Mila closes her eyes, content.
