Story

Sem speelt op de binnenplaats

1. Op de binnenplaats van het appartementencomplex zit Opa Jan op een houten bank.

   In the courtyard of the apartment complex, Grandpa Jan sits on a wooden bench.

2. Hij glimlacht naar zijn kleinkind, Sem, die iets bijzonders wil doen vanavond.

   He smiles at his grandchild, Sem, who wants to do something special tonight.

3. Sem zegt dat hij wil optreden, want hij acteert graag en hij wil later acteur worden.

   Sem says that he wants to perform, because he likes acting and wants to be an actor later.

4. Zijn nicht Noor komt aan met een kartonnen doos vol spullen.

   His cousin Noor arrives with a cardboard box full of things.

5. Buurvrouw Fatima zet kleine stoelen neer naast de planten.

   Neighbor Fatima puts small chairs next to the plants.

6. Zijn ouder, mama Eva, hangt zachte lampjes op boven het bankje.

   His parent, Mama Eva, hangs soft lights above the bench.

7. Samen tekenen ze bordjes en noemen het vrolijk kunst.

   They draw little signs together and cheerfully call it art.

8. Vanmiddag oefenden ze de scènes, en ze maakten een eenvoudig decor.

   This afternoon they practiced the scenes and made a simple set.

9. Ze zullen beginnen als de lampjes aan zijn.

   They will start when the lights are on.

10. Dan waait er plotseling een fris briesje over het plein, en het papier met Sems tekst vliegt weg.

    Then a fresh breeze suddenly blows across the square, and the paper with Sem's writing blows away.

11. Sem kijkt erachteraan, maar hij vindt het niet, en zijn knieën trillen een beetje.

    Sem looks for it, but he can't find it, and his knees tremble a little.

12. Hij fluistert dat hij misschien niet meer durft, want hij weet de woorden niet.

    He whispers that he might not dare anymore because he does not know the words.

13. Opa Jan knikt rustig en zegt dat hij naast Sem zal zitten, zodat Sem kan beginnen met één zin.

    Grandpa Jan nods calmly and says he will sit next to Sem so Sem can start with one sentence.

14. Noor tikt op een kopje als bel, en Buurvrouw Fatima houdt het lampje stil tegen de wind.

    Noor taps a cup like a bell, and neighbor Fatima holds the lamp still against the wind.

15. Sem ademt diep in en begint: er was eens een jongen op deze binnenplaats, en hij zocht een vriend.

    Sem takes a deep breath and begins: 'Once upon a time there was a boy in this courtyard, and he was looking for a friend.'

16. Noor speelt de vriend en helpt hem de zinnen te vinden, en het publiek klapt zacht.

    Noor plays the friend and helps him find the sentences, and the audience claps softly.

17. Mama Eva schenkt warme thee in, en iedereen glimlacht, want het kleine spel is toch heel mooi.

    Mama Eva pours warm tea, and everyone smiles, because the little game is really nice.

18. Opa Jan zegt dat hij trots is, en Sem fluistert dat hij morgen weer wil oefenen, maar nu wil hij slapen.

    Grandpa Jan says he is proud, and Sem whispers that he wants to practice again tomorrow, but now he wants to sleep.
