Als je je verantwoordelijkheden nu opgeeft, zal het hele project binnen enkele weken instorten. Je erkent dat toch zeker.

If you give up your responsibilities now, the whole project will collapse within a few weeks. You admit that, don't you?
Anna
Ik geef niets op, Lars. Ik weiger gewoon ter verantwoording te worden geroepen voor beslissingen die mij zonder consultatie zijn opgelegd.

I'm not giving anything up, Lars. I just refuse to be held responsible for decisions that were imposed on me without consultation.
Lars
Dat mag zo zijn, toch zullen de gevolgen van jouw terugtrekking tientallen collega's treffen die niets met die beslissingen te maken hadden.

That may be so, yet the consequences of your withdrawal will affect dozens of colleagues who had nothing to do with those decisions.
Anna
Ik waardeer het dilemma, maar elke actie roept een reactie op. Als het management weigert te luisteren, moet uiteindelijk iets toegeven.

I appreciate the dilemma, but every action causes a reaction. If management refuses to listen, something will have to give.

In principe mee eens. Echter, dramatische gebaren lokken doorgaans even dramatische tegenreactie uit, en leveren zelden de gewenste verandering op.

I agree in principle. However, dramatic gestures usually provoke equally dramatic counterreactions and rarely produce the desired change.
Anna
Misschien. Toch heeft het alternatief — passieve aanvaarding — duidelijk niets opgeleverd in de afgelopen drie jaar.

Maybe. Still, the alternative — passive acceptance — clearly achieved nothing in the past three years.

Een terecht punt. Toch zou een meer afgemeten reactie grotere sympathie van neutrale waarnemers kunnen veiligstellen.

A fair point. Still, a more measured response might win greater sympathy from neutral observers.
Anna
Sympathie alleen zal verankerd beleid niet doen verschuiven. Soms moet men escaleren om serieus te worden genomen.

Sympathy alone will not shift entrenched policy. Sometimes you must escalate to be taken seriously.
Lars
Dat klopt, maar escalatie brengt risico's met zich mee. Zodra spanningen openlijk uitbarsten, zijn ze opmerkelijk moeilijk te beheersen.

That's true, but escalation brings risks. Once tensions openly erupt, they are surprisingly hard to control.
Anna
Ik zal het gevaar niet ontkennen. Niettemin heeft inactiviteit ook verborgen kosten die zelden worden erkend.

I will not deny the danger. Still, inactivity has hidden costs that are rarely recognized.
Lars
Dat is het dilemma, nietwaar? Zowel actie als inactie genereren gevolgen die ver voorbij de oorspronkelijke beslissing reiken.

That's the dilemma, isn't it? Both action and inaction create consequences that reach far beyond the original decision.

Precies. Daarom worstel ik hier al weken mee. Wat ik ook kies, iemand zal de kosten dragen.

Exactly. That's why I've been struggling with this for weeks. Whatever I choose, someone will bear the costs.

Ik begrijp het. Misschien is de verstandigste koers om breder te raadplegen alvorens zich aan een onomkeerbare stap te verbinden.

I understand. Maybe the wisest thing to do is get more advice before taking an irreversible step.

Goed advies. Een pauze voor reflectie maakt zelden iets erger — en onthult af en toe opties die voorheen over het hoofd werden gezien.

Good advice. A pause to reflect rarely makes things worse — and sometimes shows options that were missed before.
