In Turkish, 'sebep-sonuç yapıları' are sentence patterns used to express cause and effect. They help you explain why something happens and what the result is.

When to use it

Use these structures in Turkish to explain reasons and results, to answer 'why' questions, or to connect two related events in a sentence.

Key forms

  • -dığı için (because...)
  • -den dolayı (because of...)
  • -dığı için (since...)
  • bu yüzden / bu nedenle (therefore, so)

Examples

Yağmur yağdığı için dışarı çıkmadım.

English: I didn't go outside because it rained.

Hasta olduğumdan dolayı okula gitmedim.

English: I didn't go to school because I was sick.

Hava çok soğuktu, bu yüzden evde kaldık.

English: It was very cold, so we stayed at home.

Geç kaldım çünkü otobüs gelmedi.

English: I was late because the bus didn't come.

Tips

  • Remember to use the correct verb suffixes for -dığı için and -den dolayı.
  • Pay attention to the vowel harmony when adding these suffixes.
  • In Turkish, the reason usually comes before the result.

Exceptions and edge cases

  • Sometimes, 'çünkü' can be used at the beginning of the second sentence to explain the reason.
