When to use it

Use these prepositions to talk about when something happens, how long it takes, when it starts or ends, and to describe periods of time.

Examples

Ik sta om 7 uur op.

English: I get up at 7 o'clock.

We gaan op zaterdag naar de markt.

English: We go to the market on Saturday.

In de winter is het koud.

English: It is cold in the winter.

Van maandag tot vrijdag werk ik.

English: I work from Monday to Friday.

Na het eten wandelen we.

English: We walk after dinner.

Tips

Use 'op' for specific days and dates (op maandag, op 1 januari).
Use 'in' for months, years, and seasons (in juli, in 2021, in de lente).
Use 'om' only for exact times (om 3 uur, om half negen).

Exceptions and edge cases

For 'nacht' (night), use 'in de nacht', not 'op de nacht'.
No preposition is used with 'volgende week', 'vorige maand', etc. (just say: volgende week, vorige maand).
