Mias Marktmaß

1. Mia steht am Obst- und Milchstand auf dem Abendmarkt und hält ihre kleine Liste in der Hand.

   Mia stands at the fruit and milk stall at the evening market holding her little list in her hand.

2. Sie hat die Liste heute nach dem Abendessen geschrieben, weil sie morgen Pfannkuchen backen will.

   She wrote the list tonight after dinner because she wants to bake pancakes tomorrow.

3. Auf der Liste stehen: eine Flasche mit einem Liter Milch, ein Kilo Äpfel und ein blaues Band, einen Meter lang.

   On the list are: a bottle with one liter of milk, a kilo of apples and a blue ribbon one meter long.

4. In ihrem Portemonnaie hat sie fünf Euro.

   She has five euros in her wallet.

5. Mia mag Zahlen, und sie misst mit ihrem Papiermaß die Breite des Bandes: zwei Zentimeter.

   Mia likes numbers, and she measures the width of the ribbon with her paper ruler: two centimeters.

6. Der Bauernhof, von dem die Äpfel kommen, ist nur einen Kilometer von hier.

   The farm the apples come from is only one kilometer from here.

7. Ayşe, die Verkäuferin mit dem bunten Schal, winkt freundlich und fragt: "Was braucht ihr heute?"

   Ayşe, the seller with the colorful scarf, waves kindly and asks, "What do you need today?"

8. "Wir brauchen Milch und Äpfel", sagt Mia, und sie rechnet nach.

   "We need milk and apples," says Mia, and she adds it up.

9. Die Milch kostet zwei Euro, und das Kilo Äpfel kostet drei Euro.

   The milk costs two euros, and a kilo of apples costs three euros.

10. "Das muss reichen", denkt sie und atmet ruhig aus.

    "That should be enough," she thinks and breathes out calmly.

11. Doch Ayşe zeigt auf ein kleines Schild und sagt leise, dass die süßen Äpfel heute ein bisschen teurer sind.

    But Ayşe points to a small sign and quietly says that the sweet apples are a bit more expensive today.

12. Jetzt fehlen Mia fünfzig Cent, und sie wird still.

    Now Mia is fifty cents short, and she goes quiet.

13. Papa lächelt und sagt: "Es ist in Ordnung, weil wir eine kleinere Tüte nehmen können."

    Dad smiles and says, "It's okay, because we can take a smaller bag."

14. Ayşe nickt und gibt Mia vorsichtig eine kleine Tüte mit roten Äpfeln.

    Ayşe nods and carefully gives Mia a small bag of red apples.

15. Mia bezahlt die Sachen, legt die Münzen ordentlich hin und zählt langsam bis fünf.

    Mia pays for the things, lays the coins neatly down, and counts slowly to five.

16. Dann zeigt Ayşe Mia eine alte Münze aus einer Dose und sagt: "Ein Pfund aus London."

    Then Ayşe shows Mia an old coin from a tin and says, "One pound from London."

17. Papa deutet auf das Bild und flüstert: "Es ist aus einem alten Jahrhundert."

    Dad points to the picture and whispers, "It's from an old century."

18. Mia stellt sich vor, wie Menschen hier vor langer Zeit am Markt standen und tauschten, sie fühlt sich warm und sehr müde und freut sich auf das Bett.

    Mia imagines how people stood and traded at this market long ago; she feels warm and very tired and looks forward to bed.
