What this grammar point covers
Wh- questions are questions in English that begin with a word like who, what, where, when, why, or how. These words ask for specific information.
When to use it
Use Wh- questions to ask for information about people, places, things, time, reasons, or ways something happens.
Key forms
- Wh- word + auxiliary verb + subject + main verb?
- Examples: What are you doing? Where do they live? Who is your teacher?
Examples
What is your name?
Who is your friend?
When does the class start?
Why are you happy?
Tips
- Remember to use the auxiliary verb (do/does/is/are) after the Wh- word, except when 'who' is the subject.
- Do not use 'do/does' with the verb 'to be' (is/are/am).
- The Wh- word always comes at the start of the question.
Exceptions and edge cases
- When 'who' or 'what' is the subject of the question, do not use an auxiliary verb. Example: 'Who called you?'
