When to use it
Use these forms to ask for information, to check facts, or to get yes/no answers in English.
Key forms
- Do/Does + subject + base verb? (Do you like coffee?)
- Is/Are + subject + ...? (Is she your friend?)
- Can + subject + base verb? (Can he swim?)
- Wh- question word + auxiliary + subject + base verb? (Where do you live?)
Examples
Is it raining?
Where do you live?
Can she help us?
Tips
- Remember to use 'do' or 'does' for most present simple questions.
- For 'he', 'she', 'it', use 'does' instead of 'do'.
- Don't forget to change the word order: the auxiliary verb comes before the subject.
Exceptions and edge cases
- For the verb 'to be', do not use 'do/does'. Start the question with 'Is' or 'Are'.
- Some modal verbs (like 'can', 'should') also do not use 'do/does'.
