A yes/no question is a question in English that can be answered with 'yes' or 'no'.
When to use it
Use yes/no questions to ask for confirmation, information, or permission when the answer can be 'yes' or 'no'.
Key forms
- Do/Does + subject + base verb? (Do you like pizza?)
- Is/Are/Am + subject + ...? (Is she happy?)
- Can/Will/Should + subject + base verb? (Can he swim?)
Examples
Is he your friend?
Can you help me?
Are they at home?
Tips
- Remember to put the auxiliary verb (do/does/is/are/can) before the subject.
- Don't use 'do/does' with 'be' (is/are/am).
- Use 'does' for he/she/it and 'do' for I/you/we/they.
Exceptions and edge cases
- With the verb 'to be', do not use 'do/does'.
- Some modal verbs (can, will, should) also come before the subject.
