The present continuous is a verb tense in English. It shows that something is happening right now or around the present time.
When to use it
Use the present continuous for actions happening right now, or for things that are happening around this time but not always.
Key forms
- am/is/are + verb-ing
- I am eating.
- She is reading.
- They are playing.
Examples
He is cooking dinner.
We are watching TV.
They are running.
Tips
- Always use am/is/are before the verb.
- Add -ing to the main verb.
- Do not use present continuous for things you do every day (habits).
Exceptions and edge cases
- Some verbs (like 'know', 'like', 'want') are not usually used in the present continuous.
