ANNOUNCEMENTS

Welcome to the SmartWords blog

We're opening up a space to share how we think about language learning, what we're building, and the research that shapes the SmartWords app.

Editorial illustration introducing the SmartWords blog

We've been building SmartWords quietly for a while now. The vocabulary library, the grammar explanations, the CEFR-aligned course structure — each piece exists because we kept running into the same gap: most language tools optimise for streaks, not for the actual mechanics of how adults learn a second language.

This blog is the space where we'll talk about that out loud.

What you'll find here

Expect three kinds of posts:

  • Study guides. Practical pieces on how to use SmartWords (and language learning in general) effectively — spaced repetition cadence, when to drill grammar vs. acquire it through reading, how to recover from a lapsed streak without starting over.
  • Behind the scenes. Why the lesson scheduler is built the way it is. How we pick CEFR levels for new vocabulary. The trade-offs we make when generating practice items at scale.
  • Research notes. Short summaries of papers and findings that influence our roadmap, with our take on what's load-bearing vs. what's interesting but not actionable.

Why a blog and not just docs

Documentation answers "how does this feature work." A blog can answer "why does this feature exist at all" — and that's the question we get most often from learners, teachers, and the people we work with. If you've ever wondered why we don't gamify XP the way some other apps do, or why the dictionary entries look the way they do, those are the kinds of things we want to write about here.

We'll publish irregularly but seriously. Subscribe to the RSS feed if you want to follow along.
