Use plural nouns to talk about more than one of something countable in French.

Key forms

  • nom + -s (chats, livres)
  • nom + -x (chevaux, jeux)
  • nom + -aux (animaux, journaux)
  • irregular plurals (œil → yeux)

Examples

J'ai deux chats.

English: I have two cats.

Il y a cinq livres sur la table.

English: There are five books on the table.

Les enfants jouent.

English: The children are playing.

Elle achète des tomates chaque semaine.

English: She buys tomatoes every week.

Tips

  • Most French nouns add -s for the plural, but it is usually silent.
  • Some nouns change to -x or -aux in the plural.
  • Articles (le, la, un, une) also change in the plural (les, des).

Exceptions and edge cases

  • Some plurals are irregular: œil/yeux, cheval/chevaux, animal/animaux.
