What this grammar point covers
Conjunctions are words we use to connect words, phrases, or sentences in English. They help us show the relationship between ideas.
When to use it
Use conjunctions to join two ideas in a sentence: to add information (and), show contrast (but, although), give a reason (because), show a result (so), or offer a choice (or).
Key forms
- and
- but
- or
- so
- because
- although
Examples
She is tired but happy.
Do you want pizza or pasta?
It was raining, so we stayed inside.
He left because he was late.
Tips
- Remember, conjunctions join words or sentences. Do not use them at the start of every sentence.
- After 'because', use a full sentence: 'because I was hungry', not just 'because hungry'.
- Do not use 'so' and 'because' together in the same sentence.
